Let’s take a look at two search giants Google and Yandex to see which one is better and what is the difference between them. Personally I use only Google, which is understandable, but I respect Yandex because they are definitely keep going forward in their development, unlike some hopeless search engines like Bing and Mail.ru. Yes, average users always benefit from competition – there’s always something to choose from.

Because in “ru.net” the concept of “the search quality” is quite abstract and it is hard to interpret it in one certain way, I think we should evaluate the list of indexes which are when summed will tell us about the quality of the search engine in whole.

Before I start, I want to say that everything written is true (proven by practical experience) for SFHB (Sites For Human Beings) aged between 1 to 5 years and natural stats without any cheating of the tCI (Thematic Citation Index) from 10 to 90 and PR from 1 to 4. Amount of selected sites: 10.

1. Amount of pages indexed
2. Indexing speed
3. Relativity of the output (semantic mapping of the search query to the output)
4. Influence of the site’s links’mass
5. Filtering quality of the “search spam”
6. Tools for faster indexing
7. Social factors
8. URI and direct entry influencing site’s position

1. Amount of pages indexed
As it was announced by Chairman of the Board of Directors Google – Eric Schmidt: “The bigger index gets the better relativity and bigger picture”. That is true. More sites Google knows, more chances user has to find the information he is looking for. Unfortunately Google and Yandex stoped publishing openly information about their search index size. But we are clever ones and will use a “magic request” “site:” that’ll get us next results:

Google: 8 mlrd. pages
Yandex: 2 mldr. pages

Summary: Google is better than Yandex in four times.

Let’s see now the amount of pages in the index for each of the following ten sites:

As per table we can see that for Russian websites Yandex looses to Google in 3 to 10 times. Whereas for English websites the story is very sad. Here for some sites Yandex’s index could be smaller hen Google’s in hundreds of times!

Of course, index contains large amounts of “crapy sites”. E.g. ucoz.ru has 17 million websites right now.

2. Indexing speed
As I mentioned before we’ll evaluate natural indexing speed, without any additional tricks. The average time for indexing one new page by Google through the group of sites mentioned in the beginning of this article takes from 4 hours up to one day. Whereas Yandex indexes the same pages (if it indexes them at all) from 2 to 10 days.

Also the chances to get into results straight after indexing by using low rate query in Google are quite high, unlike Yandex where page should stay for a while in line before it displayed in the results.

By the way, talking about displaying results. Positioning of the sites is being updated on average 30% faster at Yandex. On the graph you could see the relation of change in the position in the results display.

3. Relativity of the output (semantic mapping of the search query to the output)
How should we interpret this term? E.g. we want to order a pizza. The expectation is – the search engine displays closed pizza bakeries. Logical, isn’t it? Nothing special about it. Google displays quite reasonable results:

Yandex not only does not understand that it misinterprets query’s morphology (instead of Sokolniki gets Sokol) but also instead of pizza it offers to get a prostitute. Just wonderful!

Let’s try another query “Programming language D”. Google honestly gets for us everything related to the D programming language, whereas Yandex, which when gets to the 10th result it forgets what language are we searching for and offers us language Python. And from second page of the Yandex’s search results 50% of them are having no relation to the D programming language.

4. Influence of the site’s links’mass
Both of the search engines prefer a good quality entry links. But first of all, Google’s algorithms are way better distinguish and take a note of spammed and bought links, secondly the experience shows that in the Google’s TOP by average query is possible to get without buying links. Let’s look at the next example. The amount of queries “Open study” is about 3000 per month. The article about “Open study” (second link) got to TOP 2 in 8 hours after publishing without any external links.

Now, let's take a look at Yandex. This time at least it does not offer us a prostitute but all TOP is irrelevant or contains all sorts of random crap.

Considering the statistics from my sites I can say that Yandex likes the links a lot and totally ignores their quality. As the result “crap-sites” easily get to the TOP and good sites stay unnoticed.

5. Filtering quality of the “search spam”
Good example is the ucoz.ru based web sites – none of them are normal. Site Ucoz.ru automatically means that it’s content would have no meaning and the audience, if it’s present at all, could rate to mentally disabled patients.

Google has indexed 17,500,000 sites
Yandex 55,000,000

There we have it – Yandex has index small enough and out of this “small enough” significant part is “crap-sites”.

6. Tools for faster indexing
Honestly, I have never seen necessity to speed up the web sites indexing. If the site is regularly updates it’s content, then google-bot will visit it often anyway. But for Yandex SEO guys have to play perverted games quite a lot. For unknown reasons Yandex likes Twitter a lot but that service, so it’s potential users quite, is screwed up, but at this moment Twitter is the only way to force Yandex to index your page in a least amount of time.

7. Social factors
Google likes when on the page +1 is clicked or it’s linked to the Google Plus. Both search engines prefer good behavioural factors. I’m not certain about the influence of the links from the other social networks, but in my observation they are approximately in the same manner influence both search engines. But here I’d like to make a note that their influence is not that big (except the mentioned G+).

8. URI and direct entry influencing site’s position
Both of the search engines like exact entry of the URL and Title. But per my observation Yandex prefers it a little better. Especially when it relates to low rate queries. You don’t even need to buy links here

That’s enough for the web site to have the minimum trust and by having exact entry it is very easy to get to the TOP.

Summary
Yandex is definitely behind the Google. There are no reasons to use Yandex to search information because there is a big possibility that it is not indexed at all.
